About Saint Andrew
Saint Andrew is an active Anglican parish church in Whitmore Reans, north-west of central Wolverhampton in the West Midlands. Named for the apostle Andrew, it belongs to the Church of England and occupies the plot used by its Victorian predecessor.
A church was founded here in 1865 and opened for worship in 1870. After fire devastated that structure in May 1964, it was cleared and replaced by Richard Twentyman’s modern design, which was consecrated in September 1967. The present building is principally red brick, with an approximately square footprint, few external openings and concealed skylights illuminating its restrained white interior. Older fabric and fittings were preserved, including the baptismal font, masonry beside the altar, and stained glass and furniture in the six-sided Lady Chapel. John Piper created the large western window, assembled by Patrick Reyntiens and added in 1974. Its seven sections interpret the Sea of Galilee through abstract blue forms, fish and water imagery, recalling Andrew’s occupation as a fisherman.
