About Knowle United Reformed Church
Knowle United Reformed Church stands on Station Road in Knowle, West Midlands. It is a United Reformed place of worship and a Grade I listed building, reflecting its considerable historic and architectural importance.
The church originated in the early fifteenth century and is believed to have been consecrated in 1403. A collegiate foundation was established there in 1416 and remained until 1547. Its distinctive features include a lofty chancel and a passage beneath it for processions. Restoration took place in 1860, followed by substantial work in 1900 under architect J. A. Chatwin. This later scheme added an organ chamber and vestries, relocated the choir and Walter James Bird organ beside the chancel, and altered the chapels and stalls. The ring comprises eight bells, including three cast in 1931; the other five were recast in 1979 by John Taylor of Loughborough.
