About Parish Church of St John the Evangelist
The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist stands on St Johns Road in Kates Hill, Dudley, and belongs to the Church of England. The building received Grade II protection in May 2009. Shut in 2002 because it was considered unsafe, the church welcomed visitors again fourteen years later, while repairs remained under way. Worship resumed with a service in July 2018.
William Bourne designed the church, which was completed and opened in 1840. He was also responsible for St James’s at Eve Hill, constructed concurrently to a comparable plan. At that time, Kates Hill retained a mainly rural character, but homes for industrial employees soon created a densely populated neighbourhood. Further council homes appeared nearby between the world wars. A preservation group later secured the lease and supported the building’s recovery. Among those buried in the churchyard are William Perry, the boxer nicknamed the Tipton Slasher, and Marion Richardson, an educator and writer on handwriting.
