About St Thomas' Church, Coventry
St Thomas’ Church, Coventry, stood on Albany Road in Coventry, West Midlands. The Grade II listed building had ceased to serve as a place of worship by 1973. It was formally declared redundant in 1974 and demolished two years later.
Designed by the Lancaster architectural practice Sharpe and Paley, the church was constructed between 1848 and 1849 in the Decorated Gothic style. Its stone came from Lord Leigh’s quarry at Stoneleigh Abbey. The layout included an aisled nave of five bays, a clerestory, a three-bay chancel, vestries and a northern porch. An octagonal bell turret rose at the north-west corner, topped by a cross and ornamented with rounded forms resembling crockets. Inside, carved angel corbels bearing shields supported the nave’s exposed timber roof. The west window combined four lights with quatrefoils and a large sexfoil.
