About St Mary's

St Mary’s stands on Hall Lane in Walsgrave, Coventry, and serves as a Church of England place of worship. The church has Grade II* protection in recognition of its architectural and historical significance and continues to be used for religious purposes.

A chapel was established here in Norman times, later than 1086, and appears in surviving records from 1221. A font and a decorative capital, each fashioned in red sandstone, are the only remnants associated with that earlier building. The church dates from about 1300, but extensive rebuilding in either the later 1200s or the 1300s may have replaced its earliest structure. Local red sandstone forms the main fabric, supplemented by grey sandstone in subsequent work. Medieval alterations were followed by further changes during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The tower was constructed in the fifteenth century, while windows dating to the fourteenth century and other surviving medieval elements are among its notable historic features.
