About St Barbara's Church
St Barbara's Church serves Earlsdon, a suburb of Coventry in the West Midlands. It remains an active Church of England parish within Coventry Diocese, under the Archdeaconry of Coventry and the Coventry South deanery.
Constructed during 1930 and 1931, the church replaced a smaller place of worship close by. Henry Paley, of the Lancaster firm Austin and Paley, produced the design, while local architect Herbert Jackson advised on the project and supervised the works. Sir Alfred Herbert, a Coventry industrialist, laid the foundation stone on 28 September 1930, and the building was consecrated on 26 September the following year. Financial constraints prevented completion of the planned western bays, porches, baptistry and bell turret. The project cost £17,644. Herbert contributed £975 towards the Lady Chapel, created in memory of his second wife, Florence, who died in 1930.
