About The Metropolitan Cathedral and Basilica of St Chad
The Metropolitan Cathedral and Basilica of St Chad is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Birmingham city centre, West Midlands. Dedicated to the Mercian saint Chad, it is the chief church of the Birmingham archdiocese and houses the archbishop’s official seat. The cathedral has Grade II* protection and holds the papal rank of minor basilica, a distinction shared by three other English churches.
Augustus Pugin created the design, and construction began with the laying of the first stone in October 1839. The church opened for worship after its consecration in June 1841, placing it among the earliest new Catholic places of worship established in England since the Reformation. Cathedral rank followed in 1852, with basilica status granted in 1941. An incendiary device pierced an aisle roof during bombing in November 1940, but water escaping from broken heating pipes suppressed the resulting flames. Bones traditionally identified as relics of St Chad rest in a shrine over the altar, and the crypt includes a monument to Birmingham’s inaugural bishop, William Bernard Ullathorne.
