About Stechford Baptist Church
Stechford Baptist Church is a small Baptist congregation on Victoria Road in the Stechford district of Birmingham. The church has a long record of addressing racism and encouraging closer community relations. From the 1960s it welcomed Caribbean communities, opposed the National Front during the 1970s, and later developed a congregation and leadership shared evenly between people of different backgrounds. It has also supported black-led community organisations and the rights of asylum seekers.
Founded in 1906, the church first gathered in local council schools and later used the Masonic Hall. Its present building was erected in 1926 on land purchased by the congregation. Constructed with a Canadian timber framework and asbestos panels, it was intended as a temporary hall before the addition of a permanent brick church. That replacement was never built, and part of the site was sold for housing during the 1970s. The congregation retains written meeting records dating from its foundation.
