About St Michael's
St Michael's is a Roman Catholic church on New Meeting Street in Birmingham, West Midlands. It remains a place of worship serving Catholic congregations, including Polish Masses. The church has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 25 April 1952.
The original building dated from 1726 and served English Dissenters as the New Meeting chapel. It was destroyed during the Priestley Riots of 1791, which targeted Joseph Priestley, its Unitarian minister from 1780. A replacement opened in 1803, and a blue plaque recalls Priestley’s connection. After the congregation moved towards a new building in Broad Street, the former chapel was bought, altered and consecrated for Roman Catholic worship in 1862. It initially served many Irish and Italian immigrants and became known locally as the Italian church. Polish former servicemen and their families adopted it after the Second World War, with the Polish congregation expanding considerably after 2004.
