About St Matthew's Church
St Matthew’s Church is an Anglican parish church in Perry Beeches, Great Barr, Birmingham, within the Diocese of Birmingham. Consecrated in 1964 and still used for worship in the Modern Catholic tradition, it has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 1997.
The parish dates from 1938, when the surrounding farmland was being developed for housing. Its earlier brick church of 1939 remains attached as a community hall. Robert Maguire and Keith Murray designed the present building, which combines brick, reinforced concrete and a copper roof, with a bell tower to the west. Locally sourced red sand gives the concrete and mortar a pink tint. Inside, the irregular six-sided plan allows clear views of the altar and blue-brick font. Original fittings include Swedish-glass lights, wooden bench pews, pulpit and lectern. Later additions include an English ash altar, two icons, an organ installed in 2011, and fourteen Stations of the Cross by Nicholas Mynheer.
