About St Mary’s Church, Harborne, Birmingham
St Mary’s Church, Harborne is an active Roman Catholic parish church in Birmingham, West Midlands. It stands on Vivian Road beside St Mary’s Primary School. Established by the Passionists, the parish is now cared for by the Augustinians.
The congregation began in 1870, when the Passionists used a former Methodist chapel in Harborne High Street for worship. Construction of the present church commenced on 8 September 1875, and the building opened on 6 February 1877. Harborne Lodge, the house behind it, later proved too cramped and impractical for the religious community. A new retreat was therefore created to connect the original residence with the church. Bishop of Birmingham Edward Ilsley blessed and formally opened this addition in late May 1911.
