About St Mary's Church, Aston Brook
St Mary’s Church, Aston Brook served as an Anglican parish church in Birmingham, West Midlands. The building is no longer standing, as it was pulled down in 1972.
James Murray designed the church, which was completed in 1863 and formally dedicated that December by Henry Philpott, the Worcester bishop. A new parish followed in 1864, assembled from areas previously attached to churches in Aston, Lozells and Duddeston. A school educating girls and younger children began operating four years later. The tower was constructed in 1882, while Norman and Beard supplied an organ with two manuals. The congregation also supported a cricket club. During the 1870s, its players met Aston Villa in an unusual match that combined rugby rules before half-time with association football rules afterwards. Aston Villa won through the game’s sole goal.
