About St Mary's Church
St Mary's Church formerly served an Anglican parish in Whittall Street, Birmingham, in the West Midlands. It ceased operating in 1925 and was subsequently removed so that Birmingham General Hospital could be enlarged. The congregation’s parish was combined with Bishop Ryder Church, and income from selling the property supported the construction of another St Mary’s at Pype Hayes. Waterfall House stands on the original location today.
Joseph Pickford designed the octagonal building, which was completed in 1774 to provide extra worship space connected with St Martin in the Bull Ring. Mary Weaman donated the plot and supplied £1,000 towards the total cost of £4,500. Two years later, a section of gallery fell while a service was taking place, without causing injuries. The replacement galleries were strengthened with cast-iron supports. After defects were found in 1866, the spire and tower were reconstructed in a Gothic design, with another phase of rebuilding following later.
