About St Edward's Church, Selly Park, Birmingham
St Edward’s Church, Selly Park, Birmingham is an active Roman Catholic parish in the Selly Park district of Birmingham, West Midlands. The parish forms part of Birmingham’s Roman Catholic archdiocese.
Stafford architect Henry Thomas Sandy planned the church in a Decorated Gothic manner. King’s Heath contractor William Bishop built its nave, which opened on 13 October 1902 in a ceremony attended by Edward Ilsley, Birmingham’s Catholic bishop, and his Shrewsbury counterpart, Samuel Webster Allen. Further work followed in 1925 and 1926, when the sanctuary and adjoining chapels were added to plans by George Bernard Cox, a partner in Harrison and Cox. John Bowen and Sons, based in Balsall Heath, carried out this phase. Construction concluded with completion of the building’s west end in 1936.
