About St David's Church
St David’s Church was a Church of England parish church in the Highgate area of Birmingham, West Midlands. Formerly situated on Bissel Street, it ceased to serve as a church in 1947 and was subsequently demolished. Its parish was then returned to St Luke’s Church on Bristol Street.
The Bishop of Worcester, Henry Philpott, laid the foundation stone in July 1864. Designed by William Martin of the architectural practice Martin & Chamberlain, the church was constructed by Birmingham builders J & W Webb and consecrated in October 1865. It received a parish formed from part of St Luke’s in 1866. Banfield installed an organ soon after the consecration. In 1914, several suffragettes interrupted a bishop’s visit, calling for prayers for imprisoned campaigners and urging him to oppose their treatment. Police protected the women from an angry crowd as they departed.
