About St Catherine's Church, Nechells
St Catherine's Church, Nechells was an Anglican place of worship on Scholefield Street in Birmingham, West Midlands. It served as a parish church but is no longer standing. Following its closure, the parish joined with St Matthew’s in Duddeston and Nechells, and the damaged building was later pulled down.
Construction began after the ceremonial laying of its first stone on 27 July 1877. Frank Barlow Osborn designed the building with Alfred Reading, and the Bishop of Worcester dedicated it on 9 November 1878. The church gained its own parish area in 1879, created from territory previously attached to St Clement’s in Nechells. An instrument made by organ builder Henry Jones was fitted in 1878. Bombing during the Second World War harmed the structure, leading to its official closure in 1945.
