About St Anne's Church, Birmingham

St Anne’s Church serves a Roman Catholic parish in Digbeth, near the centre of Birmingham. Standing on Alcester Street, it is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham and remains in use for regular Mass. The church has statutory protection at Grade II and maintains a connection with the nearby primary school that shares its dedication.

The parish began in 1849 through the work of Saint John Henry Newman, with worship first taking place inside a disused Deritend gin works. Newman’s community departed for Edgbaston three years later, but the parish remained. Its current home was completed in 1884 on a site supplied by the parish priest, John P. Dowling. Albert Vicars and John O’Neill, an architectural partnership based in London, drew up the plans, and Cardinal Manning conducted the opening. J. R. R. Tolkien later attended services here during his years in Moseley.
