About Our Lady Help of Christians Church
Our Lady Help of Christians Church is a functioning Roman Catholic parish in Tile Cross, Birmingham. It is protected at Grade II* and continues to celebrate Mass each Sunday. The parish has links with Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, which stands nearby.
Richard Gilbert Scott designed the building, which was erected during 1966 and 1967. Its slightly angular T-form arranges worshippers around an altar positioned towards the congregation, following Catholic liturgical developments of the 1960s. Distinctive toothed, curving supports made from reinforced concrete rise over the sanctuary, while copper covers the corresponding exterior surfaces. Stained glass created by John Chrestien contributes to the unified interior design. A two-manual Rowntree & Brennan box organ, dating to 1975, is also housed within the church.
