About Carrs Lane Church Centre
Carrs Lane Church Centre is situated on Carrs Lane in Birmingham, West Midlands. A United Reformed congregation worships there alongside a Methodist congregation, forming an ecumenical partnership called The Church at Carrs Lane. Its prominent cross is recognised as Britain’s largest cross that stands without external support.
The congregation began in 1748 as an independent chapel. Growing attendance, encouraged in part by the sermons of John Angell James, led to an £2,000 expansion in 1812, creating room for 600 worshippers. Thomas Stedman Whitwell planned further alterations eight years later, and Yeoville Thomason redesigned the façade in 1876. The present church was created by Denys Hinton and Partners, with work starting in 1968 and finishing in 1971. Inside is a pipe organ made by Hill Norman and Beard in 1970. A Birmingham Civic Society plaque, installed in 1995, honours Dr R. W. Dale, who served as minister from 1854 until his death.
