About St Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Linlithgow
St Michael's Roman Catholic Church stands at the eastern end of Linlithgow, West Lothian, near the Low Port and on the shore of Linlithgow Loch. Close to Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, it remains an active Catholic parish church and is protected as a Category B listed building.
The church was designed by architect Peter Paul Pugin in the Gothic Revival style. Worship began there on St Valentine’s Day in 1888, while construction was still under way, and the completed building was formally dedicated in 1893. Its establishment followed the growth of Linlithgow’s Catholic population during the nineteenth century, when Irish families arrived in Scotland and employment in West Lothian’s shale oil industry helped create a settled local community.
