About St Michael's Parish Church
St Michael’s Parish Church stands beside Linlithgow Palace in Linlithgow, West Lothian. One of the Church of Scotland’s larger historic burgh churches, it is protected as a Category A listed building. In 2024, its congregation joined with St Ninian’s Craigmailen, Torphichen Kirk and Avonbridge Church to form Linlithgow and Avon Valley Church.
A royal charter established a church here in 1138, replacing an earlier place of worship, and the new building was consecrated in 1242. After a major fire in 1424, it was largely rebuilt during the fifteenth century, with construction completed in 1540. Scottish monarchs worshipped there, and Mary, Queen of Scots, was baptised in the church in 1542. Extensive nineteenth-century repairs included the removal of its damaged stone crown steeple in 1820–21. An organ was introduced in 1871, stained glass followed later that century, and restoration culminated in rededication in 1896. Geoffrey Clarke’s aluminium crown was added to the tower in 1964.
