About Millburn Church

Millburn Church stands in Renton, West Dunbartonshire, as the remains of a former place of worship. Now roofless and unused, the structure is listed at Category A and is included in Scotland’s record of endangered historic buildings. It had ceased operating by 1985, when demolition was already under consideration.

Erected in 1845 to serve the Free Church of Scotland, the church follows Gothic architectural forms. John Thomas Rochead is considered the likely designer, although the work has also been linked to Scott Monument architect George Meikle Kemp. After repeated but unrealised restoration proposals, the roof gave way near the end of the 1990s. Severe weather brought down the steeple in 2006. Another request to demolish the ruins was made in 2009, but local objections preceded its withdrawal in 2011. The burial ground holds the graves of two nieces of Robert Burns.
