About St Michael and All Angels Church, Brownsover

St Michael and All Angels Church, Brownsover, stands in Brownsover, once a village and now part of Rugby in Warwickshire. Formerly used for Anglican worship, it closed in 1987 and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. The building is protected at Grade II*.

Founded in 1201, it originally provided a local place of worship connected with Clifton-upon-Dunsmore. Its compact form comprises a nave and narrower chancel, built from creamy stone with red-brown detailing beneath tiled roofs. Medieval changes introduced windows over several centuries, while structural supports and an entrance porch appeared following the Reformation. George Gilbert Scott oversaw an extensive restoration in 1876. Notable fittings include a round 13th-century font, a timber screen with medieval origins, an ornate Flemish pulpit from the 1700s and a decorated German organ housing dated 1660. Twentieth-century glass in the eastern window honours Rugby School’s founder, Lawrence Sheriff.
