About St Leonard

St Leonard is a former Church of England place of worship on Spernal Lane in Redditch, Warwickshire. No longer used as a parish church, it has Grade II* protection and is maintained for its historic importance. It ceased regular ecclesiastical use in 1972 and was subsequently saved after plans to convert or demolish it were rejected.

Records confirm its existence during the 1190s, while surviving masonry and glass belong to the twelfth century. The structure comprises a short nave of limestone and brick, a lias chancel, a southern porch and a western bellcote holding one bell. Alterations took place in the fourteenth century, with further rebuilding and additions between the eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries. A northern doorway made in 1535 preserves carved wooden tracery, early vertical timbers and a ring handle held by a lion’s mouth. Conservation work from 1980 onwards renewed roofs and repaired the nave, porch and bellcote.
