About Holy Cross Church

Holy Cross Church stands on Church Street in Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan. This Church of England church is a Grade I listed building, recognised for its medieval character, prominent historic setting and relationship with nearby listed buildings.

Established during Cowbridge’s development as a market town in the later thirteenth century, the church originally served as a chapel of ease to St John the Baptist at Llanblethian. Built from local limestone with white Sutton stone details, it was enlarged during the Middle Ages with a southern aisle and a chapel beside the chancel. Its distinctive tower rises to an octagonal, battlemented upper stage; an earlier spire was lost to lightning in 1480. John Prichard directed a substantial restoration from 1850 to 1852. Other features include a fourteenth-century octagonal font, stained glass illustrating Christ’s life, an early organ associated with Jasper Tudor, and eight bells installed after the original four were recast.
