About St George's Church, Sunderland
St George's Church, Sunderland, is a United Reformed place of worship in Ashbrooke, within Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. It is also called Stockton Road United Reformed Church and has Grade II* listed status. In 2007, its congregation combined with that of West Park United Reformed Church. Seven years later, the united congregation selected the St George's premises for continued use and resolved to dispose of the West Park property.
The church was erected from 1888 to 1890 for a Presbyterian congregation whose previous Villiers Street chapel had become inadequate in size. John Bennie Wilson, an architect from Glasgow, prepared the design, which drew on the form of Belfast's Crescent Church. Red sandstone quarried in Dumfries was used for the building. Most of the construction costs were met by Sunderland shipowner Robert Appleby Bartram, later knighted, who set the foundation stone in place on 7 February 1889.
