About St Hilda's Church

St Hilda’s Church is the Church of England parish church serving South Shields in Tyne and Wear. Standing in the Market Place, it remains an active place of worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

The site is traditionally linked to a chapel established around AD 647 by Aidan of Lindisfarne and entrusted to Hilda of Whitby. Robert Trollope undertook restoration in 1675, and a northern aisle followed in 1753. Much of the church was reconstructed from 1810 to 1881, with cast-iron pillars supporting its internal galleries. Earlier fittings retained during this work include Trollope’s 1675 font and a gilded chandelier made in 1802. Also dating from 1802 is William Wouldhave’s model lifeboat, which hangs overhead. The present organ was made by Thomas Christopher Lewis in 1866, with a substantial case designed by John Francis Bentley; it was enlarged in 1904 and restored in 2003–04.
