About Roman Catholic Church of St Bede and attached Presbytery including attached walls and detached wall to south

The Roman Catholic Church of St Bede stands on Westoe Road in South Shields, close to the town centre. It remains an active parish church and shares its parish with Ss Peter and Paul Church. Together with its adjoining presbytery and associated walls, it has held Grade II listed status since 2016.

The church was constructed between 1874 and 1876 in the Gothic Revival style, replacing St Cuthbert’s, which had become inadequate for the growing congregation. Its foundation stone was placed on 27 May 1874, and it opened on 22 August 1876. Gibson Lidbetter is recorded as the architect, working under Thomas Cooke Nicholson’s supervision. Difficulties caused by quicksand delayed the foundations and raised the cost from an estimated £8,000 to £11,000. After the debt was cleared, Bishop Joseph McCormack consecrated the building in 1949. Refurbishment took place in 1965 and again in 1972.
