About Saint Paul's Church
Saint Paul's Church is an active Church of England parish church in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear, near the Tyne’s southern shore. Serving Jarrow and Simonside, it is recognised as a Grade I listed building and preserves important evidence of the area’s early Christian community.
Founded in 681 as part of the Monkwearmouth-Jarrow monastic settlement, the church contains an Anglo-Saxon chancel formed from the surviving monastic chapel. A carved slab marking the consecration of 23 April 685 remains in the building. Bede lived for many years in the monastery and is very likely to have worshipped in this ancient space. After Viking raiders attacked the complex in 794, repairs were undertaken and monastic life resumed in 1074. Following the suppression of the monasteries, the building took on its parish role. Notable features include choir seating from the late 1400s, Victorian work by George Gilbert Scott, sculpture by Fenwick Lawson, and windows created by Leonard Evetts and John Piper.
