St Matthew's Church is an Anglican church on Front Street in Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear. Historically associated with the communities of Newbottle and Philadelphia, the church is part of the Diocese of Durham. Its present building has Grade II protection, granted on 15 July 1985.
An earlier place of worship, known as St Matthew’s Chapel of Ease, was erected on the site in October 1850. The land had been provided by the Earl of Durham. This chapel was taken down in 1885 to make way for the current church. Joseph Barber Lightfoot, then Bishop of Durham, laid the foundation stone on 1 May that year, and construction was finished in 1886. The surviving church therefore continues a history of Anglican worship on the site dating from the mid-19th century.
