About St Joseph's Church

St Joseph’s Church is an active Roman Catholic parish church on High West Street in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. It is protected as a Grade II listed building and serves the town’s oldest Catholic parish, established in the early 1850s.

The parish initially used a warehouse room in Hillgate and later met at the Queen’s Head Hotel following a fire in 1854. Bishop Hogarth placed the building’s first stone on 25 May 1858, with Father Edward Consitt overseeing the parish and Archibald Dunn appointed as architect. The church was blessed and formally opened by Bishop Hogarth on 5 July 1859. A Catholic school followed in 1864, while a later parish priest, Father Thomas Matthews, constructed the present presbytery. At the centenary in 1959, Gateshead had grown from one Catholic parish serving around 3,000 people to seven parishes serving roughly seven times that number.
