About St.David's Priory R.C.Church, St.David's Place
St.David's Priory R.C.Church, St.David's Place is an active Catholic parish church in central Swansea, situated between Swansea Minster and LC Swansea. Recognised as the city’s earliest surviving Catholic church, it remains under the care of the local diocese and also serves St Illtyd’s Church in Danygraig. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
The present Gothic Revival building was designed by Charles Hansom and opened in 1847, replacing an earlier place of worship established on the site around 1808. Its construction, costing £1,300, was funded through private benefactors and public contributions. Peter Lewis later enlarged the church, commissioning Benjamin Bucknall to prepare the designs. Benedictine clergy assumed responsibility for the parish in 1873, giving the building its priory title, and remained until 2009. A stained-glass depiction of the Resurrection was donated by the Swansea antiquarian George Grant Francis.
