About St Andrew's English Calvinistic Methodist Chapel
St Andrew's English Calvinistic Methodist Chapel is on St Helen's Road, Swansea. The former place of worship, identified with the Methodist Churches in the directory, has Grade II listed protection. After passing into United Reformed Church ownership and becoming derelict, it was purchased by Kafel Fund UK in 1997 for conversion to a mosque.
Established in 1862, the church was erected two years later by Scottish drapery workers and was then Swansea’s sole Presbyterian church. John Dickson produced the design, including an ornate frontage flanked by two towers. Fire caused damage in 1964, leading to the reconstruction of the hall behind the main building with a revised layout. Proposals to restore and adapt the property began in 2004, when the charity joined with Swansea Mosque.
