About Church of St John the Evangelist

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a Church of England parish church in Wotton, Surrey. It belongs to a local benefice that also includes Abinger, Coldharbour and Holmbury St Mary, within the Diocese of Guildford. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Its tower and notably high nave walls originate in the middle of the 11th century, while the chancel, northern aisle and adjoining chapel were added during the 13th century. Constructed chiefly from Bargate stone rubble, the building has roofs of Horsham stone slate and a timber-shingled bellcote. Later work includes a large Victorian porch, a vestry and a raised chancel arch. The northern chapel holds memorials to the diarist John Evelyn and members of his family. Other notable details include a dated 1632 oak screen with candle supports and a medieval south entrance decorated with small carved figures.
