About Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Church of St Mary the Virgin stands beside the Thames in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey. It belongs to the Church of England and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
The present church dates largely from 1752, when Stephen Wright designed a replacement for its medieval predecessor. Samuel Sanders Teulon substantially altered the building in 1857, adding the high apsidal chancel, a southern chapel and westward aisle extensions. Later work included a northern choir vestry in 1900 and major internal changes during the 1950s and 1972. The chancel contains Heywood Sumner’s 1892 sgraffito Gospel scenes, Salviati mosaics and seasonal foliage carvings. Other features include Clayton and Bell stained glass, historic memorials, eight bells associated with work recorded in 1901, and a T. C. Lewis organ dating from around 1890.
