About Saint Mary The Virgin

Saint Mary the Virgin stands on High Street in Stanwell, Surrey, and serves as the local Anglican parish church. It belongs to the Diocese of London and maintains an Anglo-Catholic form of worship. The building is protected at Grade I, having received its designation in August 1952.

Although the directory date is 1350, the present church traces its beginnings to the twelfth century. Documentary evidence records an endowed place of worship at Stanwell in 1204, followed by a vicarage no later than 1254. The fabric displays both Norman and later Gothic work, while its spire was added during the fourteenth century. Among the interior memorials is an elaborate monument for Lord Knyvett and his wife. A chancel memorial honours Sir Charles Brisbane, a naval officer whose career included the American War of Independence and service alongside Admirals Hood and Nelson.
