About St John
St John stands on Hale Road in Farnham, Surrey, and serves as a Church of England parish church for Badshot Lea and Hale. It belongs to the Diocese of Guildford, follows the Liberal Catholic tradition and is registered with Inclusive Church. The building has been protected at Grade II since April 1950.
Architect Benjamin Ferrey created the original design, and Charles Sumner, then Bishop of Winchester, conducted its consecration in November 1844. Rather than using the Gothic Revival approach often found in Ferrey’s work, he chose an unusual neo-Norman form. Clunch and sandstone were used for the structure, whose most distinctive element is a round tower arranged in four stages. Hale’s rapid population increase soon made the initial capacity of 175 inadequate. Proposals included lengthening the chancel, widening the southern aisle and constructing a transept to the north. A major enlargement was eventually completed in 1897. Charles Sumner and his wife, Jennie, were laid to rest in the churchyard.
