About St George's Church

St George’s Church is a Church of England church in Esher, Surrey. This Grade I listed building served as the parish church for around three centuries before Christ Church opened nearby in 1853–54. It remains consecrated, holds several services each year and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust with local support.

Dating from about 1540, the church is an uncommon surviving place of worship from the English Reformation. Its walls combine sandstone, clunch, flint and brick, while stone and clay tiles cover the roof. Inside, the open Tudor roof retains its wooden tie beams and collar beams. A small oak turret contains an early seventeenth-century clock mechanism. John Vanbrugh designed a south-side brick addition in 1725–26 for the Duke of Newcastle’s family pew. Other features include a carved pulpit and reredos from 1722, an 1812 north aisle and a sculpted memorial commissioned by Queen Victoria. The community restored the building in 1965.
