About St Martin's Church, Dorking

St Martin's Church, Dorking serves as the town’s principal Church of England parish church. Situated in Dorking, Surrey, it falls within the Diocese of Guildford and Dorking archdeaconry. The Grade II* listed church is also used for Methodist worship, following an arrangement made after the town’s Methodist chapel shut in 1973. It has an association with the neighbouring Church of England primary school bearing the same dedication.

Dorking had a place of worship by 1086, and the current structure was established during the 12th century, with some medieval elements remaining. Further enlargement took place in the 1300s. Major Victorian alterations included a replacement nave, constructed from 1835 to 1837, and renewal of the chancel between 1866 and 1868. Henry Woodyer oversaw additional work to the nave and aisles in 1872. The tower and its 210-foot spire were erected during 1873–77, with bells obtained in 1626 installed there. Enlargement of the Lady Chapel was finished in 1912.
