About Christ Church
Christ Church is a Church of England church in Chertsey, Surrey. Designed by George Gilbert Scott, it is protected as a Grade II listed building and serves as a local church.
Sir Edward Colebrooke commissioned the original chapel in 1863 on his Ottershaw estate to commemorate his late son and heir. It subsequently became the village church. The building is a rare example among Scott’s work for its use of contrasting coloured brick and retains many early details. A tower, donated by Edward Gibb, followed in 1885, while parish rooms were added during the 1990s. Charles Eamer Kempe created the chancel and nave windows, fitted in 1901 in place of plain glazing, as well as the altarpiece. The latter was produced by Norman and Burt and includes timber figures carved in Oberammergau, Bavaria. Two Commonwealth military personnel connected with the Second World War are buried in the churchyard.
