About St Tarcisius Church, Camberley
St Tarcisius Church, in Camberley, Surrey, is a Catholic place of worship serving the local parish. It stands beside the Atrium shopping centre on London Road, towards the northern part of the town. Completed in 1924, the church continues in parish use and holds Grade II listed status. Since 2007, it has shared a parish with churches at Bagshot and Old Dean.
Catholic services in Camberley date from 1869, when Mass was celebrated in residents’ homes. The present plot was donated in 1879, and an iron structure provided temporary accommodation from 1884. Bishop Peter Amigo placed the foundation stone for a permanent building in 1923, before its opening in November 1924. Frederick Walters planned the Bargate stone church as a memorial to British Catholic officers killed in the First World War. Features include a battlemented north-west tower, gabled transepts and decorated window tracery. Marble commemorative tablets, Bath stone arcades, a pine roof, original oak pews and glass installed in 1935 remain notable elements.
