About Dunblane Cathedral
Dunblane Cathedral is an active Church of Scotland parish church in Dunblane, in the Stirling council area. Its cathedral title reflects its former role as the seat of Dunblane’s bishops, which ended when episcopacy was abolished in 1689. The church is protected as a Category A listed building and is now part of a united parish with Kilmadock and Blair Drummond.
The oldest fabric is the tower’s lower section, dating to about 1100 and originally standing apart from the church. Two additional levels were built around 1500, while much of the main Gothic structure, including the choir, belongs to the 13th century. Robert Rowand Anderson directed a major restoration between 1889 and 1893, including a new roof for the nave, with further work completed by Robert Lorimer in 1912. Notable features include medieval carved choir stalls, Bishop Clement’s wall tomb and stained glass by several leading artists.
