About St Editha's Church

St Editha’s Church stands on Church Street in Tamworth, Staffordshire. It is an active Church of England parish church with a large congregation, serving both the town and the wider deanery. The church follows the modern Catholic tradition within the Church of England and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Christian worship has taken place on the site since at least the eighth century, with several earlier churches destroyed by invasion or fire. The present church was begun in 1350 after a major fire and completed in 1369 under Dean Baldwin de Witney. Much of its architecture dates from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, while Benjamin Ferrey, George Gilbert Scott and William Butterfield oversaw restoration during the nineteenth century. Notable features include the tower’s unusual double spiral staircase, surviving medieval glass, windows designed by Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown, and a historic pipe organ containing older pipework, rebuilt in 1927 and restored in 2016–17.
