About Church of the Holy Cross
The Church of the Holy Cross serves the Anglican parish of Ilam in Staffordshire and stands in Ilam Park. It remains in use as the local parish church and has held Grade I protection since 1967.
The building is believed to have originated during the eleventh century, despite neither the place nor its place of worship being included in the Domesday survey. Substantial work took place in the thirteenth century, while further enlargements followed in 1618 and 1831. Sir George Gilbert Scott oversaw restoration during 1855 and 1856. A seventeenth-century chapel contains the shrine of St Bertram, marked by an altar tomb made in the thirteenth or fourteenth century and visited by medieval pilgrims. Two Anglo-Saxon cross fragments stand outside, while the old font portrays events associated with the saint. An eight-sided northern chapel holds Sir Francis Chantrey’s 1831 monument to David Pike Watts.
