About St John the Baptist
St John the Baptist is an Anglican church on Church Lane in Ashbourne, Staffordshire. Part of the Church of England, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its surviving medieval fabric reflects several periods of construction and alteration.
The church developed from a rectangular stone structure built around 1125 on the site of an earlier Saxon place of worship. Much of the three-bay nave is Norman, including the preserved arched south entrance. A substantial enlargement followed in the early fourteenth century, adding the south aisle, chancel and pointed arch. The three-stage tower, supported by diagonal buttresses, was finished in 1515. Other features include a font dated 1514, a seventeenth-century carved oak pulpit and communion rail, and six bells. Nineteenth-century changes included rebuilding the north aisle, replacing enclosed pews with benches and restoring the south porch.
