About Underbank Chapel

Underbank Chapel is a Unitarian church in Stannington, on the western edge of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. Set beside Stannington Road with views across the Loxley Valley, it lies roughly four miles from central Sheffield. The congregation belongs to the national body representing Unitarian and Free Christian communities in Britain. The chapel is protected at Grade II.

Local worship began in 1652 in a neighbouring barn, following Richard Spoone’s gift of property and land through his will. When this first meeting place became unusable, Thomas Marriott provided a replacement, inaugurated in 1743. The present structure is built of squared, rough-textured sandstone, finished with carefully cut masonry and covered by a stone-slated hipped roof. Its notable details include lofty arched windows, stained glass showing the evangelists Mark and Matthew, and a scene of Christ receiving children. A Brindley & Foster organ honours chapel members killed in the First World War.
