About The Sacred Heart

The Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic parish church at 479 Langsett Road in Sheffield’s Hillsborough district, South Yorkshire. Part of the Diocese of Hallam, it occupies raised ground, with its tower forming a notable local landmark. The church remains in parish use and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

Hillsborough’s Sacred Heart parish became separate from St Vincent’s in 1920. After services were held in a school chapel and then a temporary church, construction of a permanent home began in 1935. It opened in March 1936. Designed by C. M. Hadfield, the building uses slender, textured red bricks laid in the uncommon Monk bond pattern. Philip Lindsey Clark produced the Stations of the Cross, the entrance statue and the Portland stone carving above the doorway. Eric Newton designed mosaics for the altar backdrop, apse and side chapels. The original bell was joined by smaller bells in 1948, creating a carillon. A gently sloping roof replaced the leaking flat roof in 1983.
