About St Paul's Church, Sheffield

St Paul’s Church, Sheffield, was an Anglican chapel in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, built to serve the town’s expanding population. Originally linked to Sheffield Parish Church, it later became the centre of a separate parish in 1824. The church closed in 1937 and was demolished in 1938. Its site was laid out as St Paul’s Gardens and subsequently became part of the Peace Gardens.

Funded by public contributions, the church was substantially finished in 1721 but did not open until 1740 because of a dispute over the appointment of its minister. Designed in the Baroque style, it accommodated 1,200 worshippers and had a prominent Italianate tower facing Pinstone Lane. A dome was added to the tower in 1769, following the installation of a John Snetzler organ in 1755. After demolition, the organ went to All Saints in Wingerworth, while a memorial by Francis Legatt Chantrey was transferred to Sheffield Cathedral. Some masonry was reused in houses on Trap Lane.
