About St. Joseph's Church, Handsworth, Sheffield
St. Joseph's Church, Handsworth, Sheffield, is an active parish serving the Roman Catholic community in Handsworth, South Yorkshire. It belongs to the Diocese of Hallam and has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 12 December 1995.
Before the present building existed, Catholic worship took place at a mission house on Stubbin Lane. The project followed discussions in Europe between Father Adrian van Roosmalen and the Duke of Norfolk, who offered to provide a church in England. M. E. Hadfield prepared the design, and Robert Cornthwaite, then Bishop of Leeds, set the first stone in place on 17 August 1879. The completed church opened formally on 7 June 1881. Its development continued in the early twentieth century under Fathers van Roosmalen, Timothy Moynihan and Arthur Kay. After his death in 1924, van Roosmalen was interred in the churchyard beside the building.
