About St John's Church, Throapham
St John’s Church, Throapham, stands in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, beside the route linking Dinnington with Laughton-en-le-Morthen. This former Anglican place of worship is Grade I listed and has been cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust since 1985. Volunteers from the Friends of Throapham Church help to manage it, and visits can be arranged in advance.
Built in 1101, the church contains earlier Anglo-Saxon masonry and occupies ground associated with one or more Celtic wells. Most of the structure is from the 12th century, with the medieval nave developed in several stages and its aisle arcades dating to around 1200. A three-stage Perpendicular west tower was added during the 15th century. The chancel and south porch were reconstructed in 1709, followed by restoration work in the 19th century. Mainly built of dressed limestone, the church contains an octagonal carved font and a richly decorated stone coffin cover from about 1300.
